Spin Doctors and a roller skater rock Asbury Lanes for filming of new 'Boombox' video

Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park was rolling — and rocking — March 24 as the Spin Doctors filmed a new music video there.

The track “Boombox” blasted over the PA as the band was on stage and a disco roller skater wheeled her way through cocktail tables set up next to the stage as the camara rolled.

The video is directed by Rich Murray, the same who directed the band's classic vid for “Two Princes” in 1991. “Boombox” drops on Friday, April 11, the same date the band's new album, “Face Full of Cake,” is released.

“We did the record down here and Jack (Daley, bassist) lives down here, and we know the production values and the way it looks down here and we wanted to get a really cool vibe,” said frontman Chris Baron. “We wanted to get some roller skaters in the video so we know it would look killer down here.”

Amber Electra, an Asbury Park burlesque and pole performer, did the roller shaking while carrying a boombox at Asbury Lanes. The fun track suggests the Band's “Up on Cripple Creek” filtered through a kaleidoscope and stirred with a disco swizzle stick.

Baron and his bandmates know the area. The frontman is a Princeton native, and Daley owns Dug Deep Production in the Asbury Park, where “Face Full of Cake” was recorded

Daley also played with an Asbury Park group you might have heard of: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, on “Saturday Night Live” in 2020.

So far, two critically acclaimed singles have been released, “Still a Gorilla” and “Rock 'n' Roll Heaven” from "Face Full of Cake.” The guys wrapped up filming for “Boombox” at the Lanes around 7 p.m. Monday, and more shots were scheduled for Tuesday, March 25, in the city.

“Last shot,” Murray yelled to the band on stage.

“Wait, that's it?” joked guitarist Eric Schenkman.

A record release show will take place Saturday, April 12, at the Brooklyn Bowl. Upcoming shows include Saturday, July 19, at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, with Blues Traveler and the Gin Blossoms.
